TABLE OF CONTENTS

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association wishes to recognize the professional contributions of Canadians in the field of Counselling.

 

AWARDS COMPETITION

An awards competition will be held each year: Four (4) categories one year and four (4) categories the following year, so that each award is presented biannually.

Awards will be presented at the annual CCPA conference in the following categories:

Odd years (2011, 2013, 2015, etc.)

The CCPA Doctoral Dissertation Award
The CCPA Counselling Resources and Training Materials Award
The Counsellor Practitioner Award
The Robert Langlois Award for Bilingualism
The CCPA Practice-Based Counselling and Psychotherapy Research Award

Even years (2012, 2014, 2016, etc.)

The CCPA Masters Thesis Award
The CCPA Research Article Award
The CCPA Professional Article Award
The CCPA Counselling Book Award

The CCPA President or designate (normally Chair of the Internal Affairs Committee) will approach and appoint a chair and review panel for each award. Panelists will be instructed by the chair to conduct their review in confidence and restrict their discussions exclusively to other committee members. All materials must be returned to the CCPA office following deliberations. Direct contact between members of the review panel and nominees may result in disqualification if deemed by the CCPA President to be a breech of the confidential review process.

The Awards Committee will accept nominations and/or applications until 15 December in the categories to be presented at the next national conference (normally held in May).

Each review panel chair will report to the CCPA National office by February 1st. The CCPA office will notify award recipients and unsuccessful nominees in writing under the
signature of the CCPA President.

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Any CCPA member in good standing can put forward a nomination by submitting a completed nomination form to the CCPA National office. The nomination must meet all criteria for eligibility.

 

THE AWARDS

1. The CCPA Doctoral Dissertation Award

Criteria of eligibility

  1. The dissertation must be part of the requirements of an accredited university for a doctoral degree specializing in counselling.
  2. The author must be a CCPA member in good standing.
  3. The dissertation must be completed and approved by the student?s examining committee in one of the two calendar years preceding the award presentation.

To nominate

  1. Submit one (1) complete copy of the dissertation. This will be returned.
  2. Submit four (4) copies of a summary of not more than twenty (20) pages suitable for publication in the Canadian Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy.
  3. Please indicate if and where this material will have been published by the following September.

General guidelines for assessment

  1. Originality
  2. Methodology
  3. Writing style and overall quality of presentation
  4. Strengths and limitations
  5. Findings and results
  6. Importance of the work to Counselling in Canada

 

2. The CCPA Resources And Training Materials Award

Criteria of eligibility

  1. The development work must be done in Canada and have been completed in the two years preceding the award presentation.
  2. The developer must be a CCPA member in good standing. In the case of multiple developers, at least one must belong to the Association.
  3. The counselling resources or training materials must be available to the profession through some medium of distribution.

To nominate

  1. Submit one (1) complete copy of the counselling resources or training material eligible for the award. This will be returned.
  2. Submit a statement indicating where copies of the materials may be obtained and the costs involved.
  3. Indicate the primary developer if there is more than one author.

General guidelines for assessment

  1. 1. Originality
  2. Degree to which the work can be considered a valuable contribution to the advancement of Counselling in Canada
  3. Style and presentation.

 

3. The CCPA Counsellor Practitioner Award

Criteria of eligibility

  1. The nominee must be a CCPA member in good standing providing a direct counselling service.
  2. The nominee must meet most of the following criteria. He or she must:
    • be involved in ongoing professional development and program development.
    • demonstrate excellence in leadership as a practicing counsellor.
    • illustrate competence in counselling and effectiveness of both skills and service.
    • be involved both within and outside the work community to promote counselling.
    • represent the optimal model of a caring person and professional whose knowledge, skills, and talents are valued by clients and colleagues.

To nominate

  1. Any one (1) member of CCPA other than the nominee must sign the nomination form.
  2. Four (4) copies of information and documentation must be provided to substantiate the eligibility criteria stated above.

 

4. The Robert Langlois Award For Bilingualism

Criteria of eligibility

  1. The nominee must have made a significant contribution to the promotion of bilingualism in or through counselling.
  2. The nominee must be a CCPA member in good standing.

To nominate

  1. Any two (2) members of CCPA other than the nominee must sign the nomination form.
  2. Four (4) copies of information and documentation must be provided to substantiate the eligibility criteria stated above.

 

5. The CCPA Practice-Based Counselling and Psychotherapy Research Award

Amount of Award: $2,000

Criteria of eligibility

  1. Cutting edge research project must be practice-based; that is, the project incorporates an element of practice in the methodology or research output
  2. Quantitative and qualitative research proposals are acceptable
  3. Collaboration with community partners is encouraged but not essential
  4. Recipient must hold CCC designation
  5. Research project must be designed to enhance or advance counselling-related practices and/or provide leadership to the profession.

  1. Duration of project
  2. Researcher(s) and affiliation
  3. Description of project
  4. Confirmation that ethical review board approval will be sought if relevant.
  5. Funding (if any)
  6. References
  7. Curriculum Vitae

What is practice-based research? 

  • practice is an integral component
  • specifically undertaken with a view to generating outputs and outcomes with a defined application to counselling; and/or
  • it theorizes contemporary practice in order to inform the researcher’s individual practice.
  • outputs and outcomes generate new or enhanced knowledge and understanding in the discipline; and/or be undertaken with a specific view to generating outputs and outcomes with a defined application (for example, new or improved products, processes, materials, or policy guidance).

Parameters of Award Funding:

  • Research projects may receive one-time funding only
  • Award may not supplement a major research grant (e.g, SSHRC, CIHR)
  • Recipient will provide update to CCPA on research progress within 12 months of receiving the award
  • Recipient agrees to present findings at CCPA National Conference*
  • Permission is granted to CCPA use the material in Webinars or other CCPA publications but CCPA does not limit the authors  publication of the material.
  • Copyright is retained by author/recipient of the awards.
  • Recipient is expected to acknowledge the source of the funding for the research in publications and presentations.
  • CCPA will cite the author in all uses of the material.

*Note: Attendance and accommodations at the conference are not covered by the grant.

 

6. The CCPA Master's Thesis Award

Criteria of eligibility

  1. The thesis must be part of the requirements of a recognized university for a Master's degree specializing in counselling.
  2. The author must be a CCPA member in good standing.
  3. The thesis must be completed and approved by the student's examining committee in one of the two calendar years preceding the award presentation.

To nominate

  1. Submit one (1) complete copy of the dissertation. This will be returned.
  2. Submit four (4) copies of a summary of not more than twenty (20) pages suitable for publication in the Canadian Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy.
  3. Please indicate if and where this material will have been published by the following September.

7. The CCPA Research Article Award

Criteria of eligibility

  1. The article must be published in the Canadian Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy in the two years preceding the award event.
  2. The author must be a CCPA member in good standing. In the case of multiple authors, at least one author must belong to the Association.
  3. The article must report the results of an empirical inquiry in counselling or its related fields.

To nominate

  1. Submit four (4) copies of the article.
  2. If there is more than one author, indicate those who are primary writers and those who, as secondary writers, contributed to the research.

General guidelines for assessment

  3. Writing style and overall quality of presentation
  4. Strengths and limitations
  5. Findings and results
  6. Importance of the work to Counselling in Canada

 

8. The CCPA Professional Article Award

Criteria of eligibility

  1. The article must be published in COGNICA or the Canadian Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy in the two years preceding the award event.
  2. The author must be a CCPA member in good standing. In the case of multiple authors, at least one author must belong to the Association.
  3. The article must have philosophical or practical implications for counselling.

To nominate

  1. Submit four (4) copies of the article.
  2. If there is more than one author, indicate those who are primary writers and those who, as secondary writers, contributed to the research.

General guidelines for assessment

  1. The work is deemed to be a valuable and original contribution to the advancement of Counselling in Canada
  2. Writing style and quality presentation

 

9. The CCPA Counselling Book Award

Criteria of eligibility

  1. The book must be written by a Canadian author or authors and must be published in the two years preceding the award event. The same book cannot be considered for
    two consecutive book awards due to the overlap of publication dates or event dates that may occur.
  2. The book must not be a compilation of articles arranged by an editor.
  3. The author must be a CCPA member in good standing. In the case of multiple authors, at least one author must belong to the Association.

To nominate

  1. Submit one (1) copy of the book. This will be returned.
  2. Submit four (4) copies of a independent review that could be published in the Canadian Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy

  1. Originality
  2. The work must be considered a valuable contribution to the advancement of Counselling in Canada
  3. Overall quality of style and presentation.
